Val Lewis talks about the Big Society agenda and community action
Val Lewis spoke to us about citizens initiating planning processes on behalf of the community. It’s a fascinating story about how groups can work together to achieve sizeable goals which help to improve the quality of life in the local area.
“What we realised from the very beginning was we couldn’t expect anyone else to do it for us, we had to invest our own time in it.”
If one of the key cornerstones of the Big Society is emphasising the value of community asset transfer, the Holden Lane Residents Association – in Sneyd Green, Stoke on Trent – have been active in getting their achievements online. Using a series of YouTube videos to chart the project, the team of residents and volunteers took over ownership of the local community hall over two years ago and have transformed it into a valuable resource which serves the community well.
As part of the Big Society event at Stafford, Richard Hammersley from Planning Aid gave a presentation about using the town planning system to achieve community goals and objectives in line with what the community wants, not people outside of the community.

At the Big Society event in Stafford, Sharon Palmer from Regional Action West Midlands delivered a presentation which tried to define the Big Society agenda and explored how this affects the relationship between communities and the state as well as the projects which are already underway.

Community Led Planning (CLP) has been a theme running through the EVC programme over the past 3 years focussing on rural areas. Last year the project, led by Community First, through the West Midlands Rural Community Action Network (WMRCAN) produced a CLP briefing paper with real life examples of how communities and public sector agencies working together can develop and implement community plans. In the final year of EVC programme the benefits of the CLP apporach will be promoted and supported in Urban areas.
Lorna Pearcey of West Midlands Rural Community Action Network (RCAN) has been delivering a project on community-led planning called Rurality and Empowerment. Its aim is to help communities to be able to affect the decision-making processes in their local area.
